HISTORIC
FRAGMENTS
The earliest known historical record documenting Megognano’s origin dates back to August 3, 946. This is the date of a deed stating that Corrado bishop of San Frediano in Lucca assigned to Azzo del fu Giovanni a farm which was part of the estate “in loco ubi dicitur Meugnano” located in “loco dicto Gugnano.”

The estate later became the property of Ugo di Toscana and was named as a manse when it was donated to the monks of the Abbey in 998. The manor house was instead built in the 1600s. Around the year 1818 Vincenzo Brini, son of Angelo da Carmignano, purchased Megognano along with the Ormanni and Poggiarello properties and made Megognano his manor house where he lived with his family. When Vincenzo passed away, his children built a chapel and a crypt devoted to St. Vincent where he was buried next to his wife. Vincenzo bequeathed Megognano to his eldest son Giuseppe, who turned it into a successful business.
The Megognano enterprise began producing olive oil, Chianti, Vinsanto, barley and other grains that were sold throughout Italy. When the estate came into the hands of Cesare Brini, Megognano’s Chianti was a highly prized wine, actually winning the gold medal at the 1904 International Exhibition in Athens.
The beauty of the site and its ties with her family history, have led Flaminia Migone, daughter of Giuliana Brini, together with her husband Luigi Franchetti, grandson of the last descendant of the ancient Sienese noble Sansedoni family and their children, to embark on a restoration and renovation project to restore the estate to its former glory.
